About the Exhibition Theme:
Beyond Closed Doors: Containments of Identity and Expression manifests and stimulates the sensibilities that transcend physical and abstract limitations. It invites viewers to look into the artist’s identity and modes of expression. What makes and creates an individual, the container of essence that we see manifested in the artworks presented? What is it that contains and creates limitations for the individual? How does the representation of oneself in the real world differ from the perceptions of others and of what is expressed through different media that is not oneself?
What a container is goes beyond closed doors and objective understandings; in a sense, a container can transcend the bounds of the institutional and the metaphysical, breathing between literal and metaphorical definitions. Artists are invited to project their self-expression through their interpretations of containment and of what it is to be contained, the experience of the world through containment.
This show accepts 2D and 3D mediums including but not limited to traditional, found, digital, audio/visual, performance-based, and sculptural pieces.

UCSC Curate This! Interns: Nirvana Alcaraz, Reya Nichols, & Linn Kyaw
About the Curate This! program
Curate This! is SCAL’s annual internship program showcasing the curatorial and creative work of local emerging artists. Each year, students in UCSC’s HAVC (History of Art & Visual Culture) program are encouraged to apply for intern curator positions here at SCAL. The interns selected out of many talented and qualified applicants are given creative control of a two week pop-up exhibition which they are responsible for publicizing, curating, and organizing. This hands-on experience with curatorial work allows student curators to express their creativity and gain working experience in a professional gallery setting.
While only three intern curators are selected to organize the exhibition, our Curate This! exhibit is open to artwork submissions from college students across the Bay Area, allowing us to display works from a myriad of emerging artists. We are thrilled to work with UCSC’s HAVC program and give college-aged artists a chance to be featured in a professional gallery.
